Over a period of 126 years, miners pulled more than 41 million ounces of gold from the Homestake Mine, the largest mine in the western hemisphere. In December 2001, Homestake closed and today, those caverns house world-leading research with experiments that are searching for dark matter and   neutrinos. Sheltered by nearly a mile of rock, physics experiments find protection from cosmic rays that can interfere with their results.
